“Culinary Travels with Gleb Astafyev” in the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov

04.09.2018

The National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve became a shooting ground for the program “Culinary Travels with Gleb Astafyev” shown on the TV channel “Hunting and Fishing”. This program consists of 12 series, three of which are devoted to travelling around Sholokhov country.

The leader of the cycle Gleb Astafyev, the well-known chief-cooker, travels around the country and comes to see hunters and fishers. He talks with his guests of the program about hunting and fishing, together they go fishing and hunting game, and then cook dishes of the trophies.

The first day of shooting was devoted to the holiday “Kruzhilin Toloki”, which for the ninth time took place at the Farmstead of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov. The film crew was an active participant in the holiday having cooked real Cossack kulesh. The kulesh made by Gleb Astafyev was a success. All the guests of the holiday could taste it and appreciate mastery of the cook.

Kulesh is soup in traditional form consisting, as a rule, of millet grits, bacon and some other ingredients. Cossacks were the first to cook kulesh in their long campaigns. As their food stock lacked diversity, they had to invent tasty, substantial and nutritious meals in haste. So there appeared a recipe of kulesh, a fast cooked meal requiring no special skills or conditions for cooking.

The shooting continued in the parental estate of M.A.Sholokhov, in the house, where the future world-known writer, an inveterate hunter and fisher, Mikhail Sholokhov was born.

On the same day the film crew visited the natural sights associated with the life and work of the writer – Lebyazhy Yar (a high steep bank of the River Don), the Giant Oak and the Otrog Spring. The beauty of these sights inspired M.A.Sholokhov for his immortal creations.

The next day shooting took place in Stanitsa Karghinskaya, where young Misha Sholokhov was carried away by fishing. They made a picture of his favourite “fish place” in the River Chir, not far from the mill farmstead of T.A.Karghin which is closely connected with the beginning of the labour and writing activity of Mikhail Alexandrovich.

Besides, the film crew visited the Museum Stables, the Old House and the Estate of M.A.Sholokhov, where they were especially attracted by the fishing and hunting accessories of the writer. The final stage was an interview with the writer’s grandson A.M.Sholokhov, Deputy of the Russian Federation State Duma.

The program “Culinary Travels with Gleb Astafyev” in the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov can be seen very soon at the TV channel “Hunting and Fishing”.
