The World of Sholokhov’s Heroes in the Works of Artists

03.07.2018

The exhibition and excursion centre “People’s House” shows the exhibition “Book Graphics on the Works of M.A.Sholokhov” enabling the visitors to see the images of Sholokhov’s heroes through the eyes of the well-known artists-illustrators.

There are 69 works by the graphic masters Vladimir Baklanov, Orest Vereisky, Viktor Galdyayev, Kukryniksy, Valentina and Leonid Petrov, Yury Rebrov from the collection of the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve.

The exhibition shows illustrations to the early works written by M.A.Sholokhov in the 1920s, the novels “And Quiet Flows the Don” and “Virgin Soil Upturned”, the works about the Great Patriotic War. Each of the illustrators is unique in drawing style, and thanks to their talent we see the heroes as if they came down from the book pages.

Yury Rebrov, who illustrated almost all Sholokhov’s works, noted: “…My illustrations are a kind of “parallel sheets” to the works by Sholokhov, my impressions of his heroes. The only thing where I limited myself was my intention not to destroy those successful visual images, which had been found by the artists and film directors working over Sholokhov’s works”.

Orest Vereisky also spoke about a special attractiveness of the great writer’s work for the artist: “Mikhail Sholokhov depicted his heroes so vividly, that knowing them better than your relatives is it difficult to picture them on the paper? And landscapes, domestic scenes – they are not simply depicted, they have been pictured already”.

The visitors will be able to appreciate the depth of penetration by the graphic masters into the meaning of Sholokhov’s word, ability to display the time, life and convey the feelings of the heroes.

Undoubtedly interesting is the portrait of M.A.Sholokhov made by the artist V.F.Dorozhinsky in his original manner: the work includes over eight handwritten chapters of the novel “Virgin Soil Upturned”. There is shown a sculptural portrait of the writer made in 1984 by Anatoly Sknarin, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation.

The exhibition is supplemented with books by M.A.Sholokhov of different years, authentic household items and clothes of the Upper Don Cossacks of the early XX century, which also serve a kind of illustration to Sholokhov’s works.

The exhibition is interesting for adults and children. It enables to take to the real art and see the images created by the great writer through the eyes of the artists, whose illustrations are recognized to be the best.

The visitors are welcome during June 26 – September 30, 2018, to the People’s House of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov (Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya, 66 Podtyolkov Street) from 9.00 to 17.00, without days off.
