Exhibition “The World of Sholokhov” Had a Successful Run in Cyprus

During June 6 –16, 2018, the exhibition “The World of Sholokhov” devoted to the work of the great Russian writer M.A.Sholokhov had a successful run in Cyprus, in the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Nicosia.

The exhibition was organized by the Rossotrudnichestvo Representation in Cyprus under the support of the RF Ministry of Culture.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition “The World of Sholokhov” took place on June 6, 2018, during the festive session, dedicated to the Day of the Russian Language. The performance of the Russian Cossack folk ensemble “Volniye Lyudi” brightened the perception of the exhibition by the visitors.

The opening ceremony was joined by the students of the Russian language courses, compatriots, members of the public and admirers of the Russian culture. The exhibition was presented by E.M.Tolstopyatenko, Head of the Scientific Exhibition Department of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov, and N.N.Trofimenko, Head of the Development Department. They told about the life and work of the Nobel, State and Lenin prizes in literature, the author of the epic novel “And Quiet Flows the Don”, which showed the Don Cossacks to the wide world. The works by M.A.Sholokhov published 1408 times in the total circulation of 105 349 943 copies in over 90 foreign languages are very popular in Cyprus.

On June 7, the Russian Embassy in Cyprus held a reception on the occasion of the Day of Russia. The chief guest was the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis. Among the honorable guests there was G.Vassiliu,theformer President of Cyprus, D.Silluris, Speaker of the Cyprus Parliament, N.Khristodulidis, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, P.Prodromu, official representative of the Government of Cyprus, M.Nikolatos, Chairman of the Supreme Court, and Z.Khrizostomos, Chief of police.

The guests were greeted by O.A.Anistratenko, Director of the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve, and V.V.Sholokhova, Deputy Director for Development of the Museum-Reserve. They presented the exhibition and told the audience about the work of the Museum-Reserve for preservation of memory about the great Russian writer, spreading the Russian literature, culture and the Don Cossack traditions.

The exhibition had a successful run within the program “Days of Russia in Cyprus” timed to the celebration of the Day of Russia.

The exhibition shows Sholokhov’s photos, illustrations to his works, historical photographs and drawings telling about the life of the Cossacks. Especially interesting were the elements of clothing and Cossack houseware: a papakha (a Cossack hat), a traditional whip, women’s shawls, and others.

During the exhibition run there were shown video presentations telling about the work of the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve, about the beauty of the Don nature.

The exhibition aroused a bright interest of the visitors, active discussion of Sholokhov’s books, his contribution into the world culture and strengthening people’s friendship.
