Sholokhov Museum-Reserve Joins the World Cup Cultural Program

06.06.2018

During the World Football Cup Games in Rostov-on-Don, the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve will present in Sholokhov-Centre a major exhibition project “The Don.Sholokhov.Russia” and an educational program “Cossack Village”.

The residents and foreign guests of Rostov-on-Don will be able to watch the football matches and learn more about the life and work of the great Russian writer of the XX century, the author of the world-known novel “And Quiet Flows the Don” Mikhail Sholokhov, about the history, culture and traditions of the Don Cossacks, the hero of his works, and to take part in the entertaining events.

The name of Sholokhov inseparably connected with the Don country entered the top five of the most outstanding Russian writers and the list of the most influential Russians of the past century. His books reflecting the life of the people and the fate of Russia arouse a constant interest of the readers and they are published in the circulation over 105 million copies in more than 90 foreign languages. At the exhibition “The Don.Sholokhov.Russia” from the Museum-Reserve collection, which will run in Sholokhov-Centre, the visitors will see over 400 museum items, mostly memoria, which left the house-museum of the writer in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya.

A greater part of the exhibition tells about the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don” by M.A.Sholokhov, an outstanding work of the national and world literature, which was awarded the State (1941) and Nobel (1965) prizes. For the first time the wide public will see the originals of the manuscripts of the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don” from the Institute of the World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences – five pages of the author’s text written by Mikhail Sholokhov during 1926–1928. Earlier these relics were available only to scientists.

The visitors will learn about the history of the novel, the historical situation its personages lived in, will see a letter of M.A.Sholokhov to Kharlampiy Yermakov, who became the prototype of Grigory Melekhov, photos of other personages’ prototypes, the first publications of the novel and its editions in foreign languages, a typewriter, a Cossack uniform, weapons of the late XIX century, battle awards – witnesses of the Cossack military glory, graphical works by the artists-illustrators Sergey Korolkov, Orest Vereisky and Yury Rebrov, and other unique exhibits.

The success of the epic about the Don Cossacks, which aroused criticism of the ideologists of proletarian literature and with difficulty struggled its way to the reader, was stunning. In 1965, the novel was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature, and for 90 years it has remained one of the most popular among the readers and widely published works in our country and abroad. The exhibition shows the diploma and medal of the Nobel Prize winner Mikhail Sholokhov, evening dresses of Mikhail Alexandrovich and his family they were wearing at the awarding ceremony in Stockholm, photos and documents telling about that event.

The visitors will see hunting and fishing tackles of the writer, who was an inveterate hunter and fisher, loved nature, which was a kind of his creative laboratory. A special interest is rare books and journals from Sholokhov’s library, personal belongings of Mikhail; Alexandrovich and his family, things that were dear or served them for a long time, memorial presents including a set of “matryoshkas” symbolizing the big and friendly family of the Sholokhovs.
