Awarding M.A.Sholokhov the International Literary “Lotus” Prize

40 years ago, in 1978, M.A.Sholokhov was awarded the international literary prize “Lotus” by the Association of Writers of Asia and Africa for the works promoting friendship between peoples, development of national cultures and literatures. The ceremony of presenting the medal and laureate diploma took place on May 6, 1978, in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya.

Mikhail Alexandrovich was given the high reward in the field of literature by G.M.Markov, the First Secretary of the USSR Writers' Union Board, who underlined that not only the distinguished achievements of Mikhail Alexandrovich Sholokhov in culture and education, but also his enormous contribution to the struggle for peace were marked.

That evening, a ceremonial meeting took place in the stanitsa’s Palace of Culture. It was attended by V.F.Shauro, Head of the Cultural Department of the CPSU Central Committee, Y.N.Verchenko, Secretary of the USSR Writer’s Union Board, M.E.Teslya, Secretary of the Rostov Region Committee of the USSR, the Don writers V.A.Zakrutkin, A.V.Kalinin, K.I.Priyma and P.V.Lebedenko.

The “Lotus” Prize was another evidence of the world recognition of the work by M.A.Sholokhov, whose books by that time had been published in many foreign languages and known to millions of readers on all the continents of the globe.

The medal and diploma of the “Lotus” Prize laureate are kept in the collection of the Museum-Reserve. At present, the medal is shown in one of the halls of the historical and literary exhibition “M.A.Sholokhov. The Time and Life”.
