Memory Day. A Frosty Day…

21.02.2018

On such a frosty February, 34 years ago, the world lost M.A.Sholokhov. The 21 of February has become Memory Day of the writer in different parts of the planet, for all who read his wonderful books, who was happy to join the millions of admirers of the unforgettable Sholokhov’s prose.

The loss of such an artist of word was enormous for all the enlightened humanity, for the people of our country and especially for the writer’s countrymen. Here, in the Don country, he was known and loved by old and young. The Don writer Anatoly Kalinin said very piercingly about this:

“Lifting a mane of waves following the immortal glory, the Don breaks out to the Azov …but Sholokhov is lost…”

A lot of water has flowed away for 34 years, washing the steep bank of Vyoshenskaya, where the grave stone bears: “Sholokhov”. The River Don and Sholokhov are still inseparable.

Today in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya, the countrymen laid fresh flowers as a symbol of memory about the person and writer, who had done a lot for the Don literary fame and Russia, to the tomb of the writer and to his bust at the River Don embankment.

A figure of Sholokhov was and still is iconic for Russian culture of the XX century. His works translated nearly to a hundred of languages conquered the whole world and are still among the top literary works.
