Join the Essay Contest on the Works by M.A.Sholokhov

The Russian Literature Department of the Institute of Humanitarian Sciences and Management (IHSM) “Moscow City Pedagogical University” jointly with the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve and the journal “Mir Sholokhova” announces the IV International Essay Contest on the Works of M.A.Sholokhov.

The aim of the contest: attraction of secondary school students to creative assimilation of the artistic richness of the Russian literary classics, the works of M.A.Sholokhov, one of its outstanding representatives.

Requirements for the Essays:

- compliance with one of the proposed topics;

- originality of the text;

- absence of incorrect borrowings from the materials posted on the Internet or other sources (the works with such borrowings – quotes from other texts without quotation marks and references are rejected and the certificate of the participant is not to be given in this case);

- textual reference to the works by M.A.Sholokhov either included in the school curriculum or outside it;

- clarity of the structure, logicality and validity of conclusions;

- disclosure in specific provisions of the work of the stylistic and content richness, and educational potential of Sholokhov’s works of fiction;

- approximate volume is 3–4 exercise-book sheets (1.5–2 of A4 format pages).

Topics of the Essays:

1. What do the characters of Sholokhov’s works see the meaning of life in (one or two examples)?

2. Ways to comprehend the author's idea in depicting the revolution (based on the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don”).

3. What is the beauty and artistic significance of Sholokhov’s epithet?

4. Which of the illustrators to the works by M.A.Sholokhov most accurately reflected the artistic intent of the writer?

5. My Sholokhov.

The best works will be marked with diplomas, and the texts of the contest winners are going to be published in the journal “Mir Sholokhova”.

The jury: Y.A.Dvoryashin (chairman), Doctor of Philological Sciences, professor, the RF Honorary Figure of Science, a leading researcher of the Institute of the World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences, chief editor of the journal “Mir Sholokhova”; A.I.Smirnova (co-chairman), Doctor of Philological Sciences, professor, head of Russian Literature Department of the IHSM Moscow City Pedagogical University; L.P.Razogreyeva, general researcher of the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve; S.A.Vasilyev, Doctor of Philological Sciences, professor of Russian Literature Department of the IHSM Moscow City Pedagogical University; I.N.Raikova, Candidate of Philological Sciences, docent, deputy director for science of the IHSM Moscow City Pedagogical University; T.O.Osipova, Candidate of Philological Sciences, docent of Domestic Literature Department of the South Federal University (Rostov-on-Don).

The texts of the works either in the form of scanned or photographed notebook pages, or computer typed in the Word text editor are to be sent to: mirSholokhova@yandex.ru with obligatory indication of the surname, name and middle name (in a full form) of the author of the work, surname, name and middle name (in a full form) of the teacher, who helped in writing (if he did), name of school (the exact official name of the educational institution, website of the organization), form, contact e-mail and telephone. The works are not reviewed. The contest timing: March 1–30, 2018.
