NewsIn All Outfits You are Nice, My Deary!16.10.2017This is the heading of the exhibition to be opened on October 20, 2017, in the exhibition and excursion centre “People’s House” of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov. It will tell the residents and guests of Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya about traditional outfit of the Don Cossack women of the late XVI – early XX centuries from the collection of the Starocherkassk Historical Architectural Museum-Reserve. There are few preserved clothing samples of this period, as they were made of fabric, material, highly susceptible to various influences. And this makes the displayed rarities more valuable: fur coats, an overcoat (rotonda), a top dress (kubelyok), different costumes, skirts, headgear, underwear and various accessories – fans, handbags, gloves. The concept “the Don costume” is very capacious, it includes all the multifaceted ethnography of Russia and Orient. A peculiar look of the Cossack costume shows harmoniously blended features typical for many nationalities. Fugitive people came to the Don area wearing their clothes, but living there they wore the clothes they gained in campaigns and searches. Cossacks said: “We wear a dress according to our ancient custom in the way we like: one is dressed in Circassian clothes, another – in Kalmyk or Russian dress of old style, and we do not condemn or mock each other.” Over time, the life in the Don region changed, so changed the clothes. The visitors of the exhibition will learn, how historical events influenced fashion, how the clothes of the Don nobility and ordinary Cossacks differed, how ladies of fashion valued accessories, why for the Cossack women, by the present, pearls have been connected with tears. The exhibition is supplemented with paintings, photographs of the Don Cossack women of the late XIX –early XX centuries and ladies’ toiletries (puff-boxes, wagons, hairpins, hat pins, and others). The unique exhibition presented by the Starocherkassk Historical Architectural Museum-Reserve welcomes the visitors during October 20, 2017–January 25, 2018.
