“Environmental Assorti” in Ternovskoy Village School

10.10.2017

On October 9, 2017, the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov started an autumn Environmental Week dedicated to the Year of Ecology in Russia. On that day a class “Environmental Assorti” was held at the secondary school of Ternovskoy Village. The class included seven workshops teaching schoolchildren the basics of the environmental professions.

At first, the children learned about the basics of geological disciplines and trained in developing practical skills of diagnostics and determination of basic minerals and rocks, “a foundation” of the environment. Then, learning about the profession of pedologist they estimated the mechanical composition of soil using a “wet” method.

The children tried to be botanists examining a herbarium and determining the plants registered in the Rostov Region Red List of Threatened Species. By the leaf samples of the tree species they tried to determine biological and ecological peculiarities of the plants, and by the cross cut of the trunk – biological species of trees.

As future ornithologists, specialists studying birds, the schoolchildren identified the birds living in the Upper Don area among lots of other birds.

The final stage was “Environmental Management” helping to make a real contribution into development of harmonious relationship between nature and man without damaging the environment. This area covers different fields of activity – from arranging of territories to waste management measures and those of harmful emissions into the atmosphere.

The children got interested in studying the peculiarities of the professions which help to protect our land and its natural resources. We hope that the knowledge they got will help the young ecologists to find their calling.
