Gathering of the Upper Don Cossack Pre-Conscripts

28.07.2017

On July 24–27, 2017, a military field gathering of young Cossacks of the Upper Don Cossack army society “Vsevelikoye Voysko Donskoye” took place in Stanitsa Karghinskaya of the Bokovsky District the Rostov Region. Gathering is a Cossack traditional form of preparation for the upcoming army service. Eight yurts (divisions) of the stanitsa were represented by their teams including 10-12 best members.

Besides testing their knowledge and abilities to act in extreme conditions, service skills, applied physical training, military tactical games and so on, for the purpose of patriotic education the young Cossacks visited the structures of the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve in Karghinskaya and Vyoshenskaya stanitsas.

They visited the mill complex of T.A.Karghin in Stanitsa Karghinskaya, saw a film in the prerevolutionary cinema “Ideal”, visited a memorial classroom in the local parochial school, which was attended by young Mikhail Sholokhov in 1912–1914.

The whole day of Wednesday, 26 July, was spent for visiting the Museum structures in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya. The Cossack pre-conscripts were gathered in the square by the building of the Sholokhov District Administration. They were greeted by A.M.Sholokhov, Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Culture of the Russian Federation State Duma, who said:

“You have come to Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya well-known for its literary fame. In Russia there are places to be necessarily visited by every Russian, at least once in his life. They are: Mikhailovskoye, Tarkhany, Yasnaya Polyana, Spasskoye-Lutovinovo and, of course, Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya. So, let you remember this, today’s event for the whole of your lives. We are always glad to see you in the land of Vyoshenskaya!”

O.A. Anistratenko, Director of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov, also welcomed the guests:

“Our stanitsa is famous not only for its ancient history, not only for it being an administrative centre of the Upper Don area, but also for the fact that it is forever connected with the name of Mikhail Sholokhov, the author of the immortal novel “And Quiet Flows the Don”. It is here that the main structures of the National

M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve are located. They are on the list of the most valuable cultural heritage objects of the peoples of the Russian Federation. In 2005, on the days of celebration the 100th anniversary of the writer, the Museum was visited by the Russian Federation President V.V.Putin. On that day, in the Museum, the former building of the stanitsa’s Ataman Administartion, he held a meeting with the atamans of the Cossack armies of Russia. You will go there today.

We are glad to show you our Museum structures. The Museum workers wish you a success in all your kind deeds, noble thoughts, courage and confidence in your future!

The young Cossacks went on a sightseeing tour about Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya, visited the Estate of Mikhail Sholokhov, literary exhibitions and, of course, the Museum Stables, where they could learn the basics of horse maintenance and traditions of Cossack military service.
