Exhibition “Travelling Around the World” in Sholokhov-Centre

16.06.2017

On June 30, 2017, Sholokhov-Centre of the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve opens an exhibition “Travelling Around the World” from the collection of the Museum of the World Ocean (Kaliningrad).

The unique exhibition will tell about marine round-the-world expeditions, discoveries of the famous pioneers and naval commanders, achievements in the marine science and how Russia had become the great maritime power.

Throughout the history of mankind voyages were a way of getting information about the countries, wildlife, general character and the surface outlines of the Earth.

A lot of fearless navigators and travellers, merchants and missioners, military men and scientists accumulated with their works and exploits the knowledge about the peoples of distant countries, their customs and economy. Sea voyages in the XVI–XVIII centuries radically changed the view of the world. With the development of physical science and improvement of instruments the voyages became more and more like research expeditions.

The Russian marine round-the-world expeditions of the XIX century had played the outstanding role in the Russian history, and their achievements took a worthy place in the world science. The expeditions of I.F.Kruzenstern and Y.F.Lisyansky opened a brilliant era of Russian ocean scientific and trade navigations.

The round-the-world expedition of “Challenger” in the second half of the XIX century revolutionized the science of the Earth. There appeared quite a new approach to the study in the World Ocean and its depths. In the XX century the outstanding discoveries were made on board the Soviet research ship “Vityaz”.

The exhibition shows a sailboat model, taxidermy sculptures and wet preparations of sea animals, shells of mollusks, geological samples, items of ethnography and everyday life of the islands of Polynesia, navigation instruments and equipment, samples of amber and items of arts and crafts, paintings and graphics by marine painters S.V.Pen, E.V.Voishvillo and B.M.Starodubtsev. The exhibition is supplemented with the works of modern photo artists.

Having made a virtual sea voyage the visitors will learn about unexplainable natural phenomena occurring in the ocean, “meet” with the unknown inhabitants of distant islands, outlandish animals and inhabitants of the sea depths, will learn about the ship arrangement and learn to use navigation devices.

The exhibition will run in Sholokhov-Centre of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov until September 3, 2017.
