Welcome to “Sholokhov Spring” Holiday!

On May 25–28, the hospitable Don country for the 32nd time holds the All-Russian literary folklore holiday “Sholokhov Spring” dedicated to the birthday of the great Russian writer M.A.Sholokhov. The holiday is included in the National Event Calendar and is held under the support of the Russian Federation Ministry of Culture.

“Sholokhov Spring” is the winner of the Grand-Prix National Award in event tourism “Russian Event Awards” in the nomination “The Best Event in Culture”. Within the thirty years the holiday was visited by 1 000 000 spectators and 50 000 actors and performers from different parts of Russia and foreign countries.

The holiday is organized by the Russian Federation Ministry of Culture, the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve, the Rostov Region Ministry of Culture and the Regional House of Folk Art.

The participants and spectators will be shown a big program to be performed in several stage areas: in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya, where M.A.Sholokhov spent the most part of his life, in Kruzhilin Village – the homeland of the writer, in Stanitsa Karghinskaya associated with his childhood, youth and the start of his literary biography, and in Rostov-on-Don.

On May 24, the birthday of M.A.Sholokhov, a ceremony of laying flowers to his tomb and his bust monument in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya, and to the monument at the Don embankment in Rostov-on-Don. In the Rostov “Sholokhov-Centre” of the Museum-Reserve the visitors will take part in the “Theatre in the Museum” and see a performance “The Shame-Child” by the cast from “Klassika” theatre. The central library of Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya will hold a literary musical social devoted to the literary work of M.A.Sholokhov.

The festivities being held in the Year of Ecology in Russia and before the 80th anniversary of the Rostov Region will reflect these themes in the bright pages of the holiday. Mikhail Alexandrovich Sholokhov contributed a lot into development of the Don country, preservation of natural resources of Russia, and took care of the forests and water reservoirs, enrichment of the Don fauna with new species. The visitors of “Sholokhov Spring” will see the materials telling about Sholokhov as a landscape master and a passionate conservationist at the exhibition “I Can’t Live without Nature…!” at the exhibition and excursion centre People’s House in Vyoshenskaya and at the photo exhibition in Stanitsa Karghinskaya.

The big holiday will be opened on May 26, with “Children’s Sholokhov Spring” which will bring together children from different parts of the country in Stanitsa Karghinskaya. The children will take part in games, competitions and workshops dedicated to the Year of Ecology in Russia, will see unique photos from the collection of the Museum-Reserve, will hear reading of the passages from the works by M.A.Sholokhov and will visit the “Pets’Corner” of the Rostov zoo. Young performers from the Rostov Region, Volgograd and Moscow will show their concert at the holiday stage.

On the same day, a journalistic and artistic social “The Don is a Holy Word for Me” devoted to the birthday of M.A.Sholokhov will take place in the Palace of Culture of Vyoshenskaya. The program will be participated by the Ryazan State Academic Russian Folk Choir named after E.Popov, the State Ensemble of Cossack Song “Krinitsa” (Krasnodar), the State Folklore Ensemble of Song and Dance “Magas” of the Republic of Ingushetia, the Honoured Dance Ensemble “Zarevo” of the Donetsk People’s Republic, and other groups.

In the morning of May 27, the folk groups will pass singing and dancing along the streets of Vyoshenskaya to the central square, where a noisy colourful “Fair of Masters”, a song marathon of the folk groups, theatrical meetings in the makeshift Cossack houses will set out. At this time, a folk holiday will begin in Kruzhilin Village. It will gather the residents and guests to hear old Cossack songs, to bring back to memory the favourite lines from Sholokhov’s books, and to join the festivity.

A meeting with writers and poets, and a presentation of new editions of the collected works by A.Kalinin and a book “The Steep Bank of the Don” by A.Sofronov, will take place in the central library of Vyoshenskaya.

In the evening, a gala concert “The Land of the Quiet Don” will be performed on the floating stage on the River Don. It will end with a great holiday fireworks.

During the holiday, many folk song and dance groups from different parts of Russia and foreign countries – Moscow, Ryazan, Krasnodar, Sevastopol, the Republic of Ingushetia, the Rostov, Arkhangelsk, Astrakhan, Belgorod, Vladimir, Volgograd, Vologda, Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod, Penza and Saratov regions, the Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s republics will show their performances on different concert stages.

During the holiday, all the Museum-Reserve exhibitions will be open till late at night, and the tours about the memorial sites and natural sights will set out.
