Now you see a commemorative sign “Oryol” (Eagle) erected in 1983 on the cretaceous mount on the right bank of the River Don. It was made by sculptor Nikolay Mozhayev, Honoured Artist of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, the Sholokhov Prize winner. The co-author of the sculpture is architect V.Desyatnichuk. The sculpture is 3.4 m tall, with a pedestal of concrete is 7 m, taking into account the bulk mound it totals 14 m. The wingspan is 7.7m. The weight is 13.5 tons. In the image of an eagle the sculptor displayed the fate of the writer, the inspiration of talent. The pedestal bears the words of A.Serafimovich about young Sholokhov: “One day I was riding across the steppe... An eagle stood out blackly on a burial mound, a young one…The dusty track wound right up to the burial mound and skirted it. And this was when he suddenly spread his wings. I simply gasped – what a tremendous span. The eagle left the ground and with scarcely a movement of those great wings soared high over the steppe. I recalled that blue-shadowed past when I read Mikhail Sholokhov’s “And Quiet Flows the Don”. A young eagle, with a yellow beak, but what a wingspread…” We hope following a virtual tour you will like to come to the homeland of the great writer and visit the Museum-Reserve.
