Arbor Day was Held in Sholokhov Museum

07.04.2017

Arbor Day dedicated to the Year of Ecology in Russia was held on April 6, 2017, in the forest area “Forest Pearl of Eurasia” of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov.

The trees were planted by the Museum workers and the students of Sholokhov Gymnasium. The holiday participants were greeted by P.I.Makushkin, Head of the interdistrict sector of Forestry Development Department of the Rostov Region Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; S.G.Shelemekh, Head of the Secondary Education Sector; and T.Y.Turchin, Deputy Director for Economic and Natural Protection Activity of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov.

On that day there were planted seedlings of an oak tree, elm plain, gladichia, alder, aspen, birch, mulberry which were grown from the seeds in the mini-cattery of the Museum-Reserve, and the forest cultures received from the Abkhazian Research Forestry Station – frog-bearer Caucasian, Japanese cedar, hickory globular and oval, red oak, Kentucky coffeetree, cedar Himalayan and ginkgo biloba.

The area of “Forest Pearl of Eurasia” is designed in the ecological and literary style: its territory is arranged with various species compositions, memorial decorations symbolizing the places, where the great writers and poets were born, lived and worked. For instance, there is an analogue of the favourite bench of the great Russian writer L.N.Tolstoy, which was recreated from birch barlings, an elm is planted to be further formed into a spade symbolizing a card game from the story “The Queen of Spades” by A.S.Pushkin. There is even “Robinson’s Calendar”, a big log with notches similar to that the hero of D.Defoe used for his chronicle. Also, it is planned to install a composition “Cranes” dedicated to the poetry of Rasul Gamzatov, a wind will described in the novel “Don Quixote” by M.de Cervantes and other symbols of the well-known literary works supplemented with the quotes from the classics.

The Arbor Day became a real holiday and one more step in preservation and increasing the forest resources of the native region.
