“Forest Tier” in Novocherkassk

11.04.2017

The First Round of the relay-quiz “Forest Tier” for schoolchildren of the southern part of the Rostov Region was held by the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov jointly with the Novocherkassk A.K.Kortunov Engineering and Reclamation Institute of the Don Agricultural University and the Don Small Forest Academy on April 8, 2017, in Novocherkassk,. It was joined by 5 teams from Novocherkassk and Krasny Sulin.

The members of the relay-quiz were greeted by O.S.Chernykh, a chief specialist of the Forest Use Department of the Forestry Development Administration of the Rostov Region Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; N.V.Ivanisova, Director of the Don Small Forest Academy, a docent of the Don Agricultural University, S.N.Kruzhilin, the dean of the Forestry Faculty of the Novocherkassk Engineering and Reclamation Institute; S.S.Taran, Deputy Director for Teaching Methods of the Don State Agricultural University; and S.A.Sivtsov, Head of the Department for Memorial Landscape Conservation and Environment Monitoring of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov.

The children were made an introductory talk by N.V.Ivanisova, Director of the Don Small Forest Academy. The relay-quiz included 6 platforms for the children to implement different assignments: they identified tree and shrub species, basic parameters of the wood stand (composition, age, height), names of herbaceous plants and the most common insects, and described the soil section.

The schoolchildren took an active part in laying a mini-cattery on the territory of the Institute experimental plot. On that day they planted the seeds of the Crimean Pine, Magnificent Catalpa and Boxwood Evergreen.

Taking part in the “Forest Tier” the schoolchildren showed and enriched their knowledge about forest. The skills and habits acquired by them in forestry and forest environment will foster their environment awareness and education, and determine their future career.

The winners and laureates were awarded diplomas, medals and presents.

The Second Round of “Forest Tier” traditionally will take place in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya, in autumn of 2017. It will be participated by the winners and laureates of the First Round.
