“Sholokhov’s Word Sounded in the Land of Austria

22.03.2017

On March 16, 2017, the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Vienna (Austria) opened an exhibition “On the Quiet, on the Free, on the Glorious Don…” of the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve. This is the second exhibition of our Museum in Austria.

At the opening ceremony the guests including representatives of creative intellectuals, Austrian public, organizations of compatriots and tourist business were greeted by Y.A.Zaitsev, leader of the Russian Centre of Science and Culture. O.A.Anistratenko, Director of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov, told about the Museum-Reserve, its activity areas and the events taking place in the homeland of the great writer. The audience was shown a documentary about M.A.Sholokhov.

The program was continued with literary readings. O.A.Anistratenko read an excerpt from the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don” by M.A.Sholokhov. The guests heard a typical Don dialect, got into the atmosphere of the scene of Grigory Melekhov’s matchmaking.

A bright impression was a mini-play performed by the actors of the Vienna theatrical laboratory named after Mikhail Chekhov directed by Irina Prodeus. The young actors skillfully read the fragments of the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don” in Russian and in German, and the folk group “Kalinka” sang Cossack songs.

Following the exhibition show the visitors asked many questions about the life and work of Mikhail Sholokhov, about culture and traditions of the Don Cossacks, and then they performed Cossack songs. The evening was ended with tasting tea made of steppe herbs and honey.

The exhibition will run in the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Vienna until April 4, 2017.
