Dedicated to the Memory of M.A.Sholokhov

On February 21, it is the 33d anniversary of the death of Mikhail Alexandrovich Sholokhov, the great Russian writer, Nobel Prize winner in literature. Annually in Russia and abroad, the events dedicated to his memory are held.

Thematic evenings, book exhibitions, readers’ conferences and lectures will be held on the days of February 2017, in the educational institutions, libraries, houses of culture of the Rostov Region, in the libraries named after M.A.Sholokhov in Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Novgorod, Novosibirsk and many other cities, and in the Russian centres of Science and Culture in foreign countries.

On February 20, a thematic evening will take place in the Palace of Culture of Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya. The audience will be shown a literary and documentary composition “The Word of Yours is My Pleasure” telling about the creative life of the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don”, about the support of Yevgeniya Levitskaya, editor of the “Moskovsky Rabochiy” Publisher, to the young writer, and about the long-term friendship of the Sholokhovs and the Levitskys families. The event begins at 15:00.

On February 21, the exhibitions of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov will run for free.

On this day, a ceremony of laying flowers to the bronze bust of the writer and to his tomb will take place in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya and to the monument of M.A.Sholokhov at the River Don embankment in Rostov-on-Don.

The residents and guests of Rostov-on-Don will enjoy a big program:

10:00–17:00 A cultural and educational project “Sholokhov’s Personages in Cinema”. Sholokhov-Centre of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov will demonstrate feature films made after Sholokhov’s works and exhibitions about the life and work of the writer.

13:00–15:00 A round table talk “The Work of M.A.Sholokhov in the Context of Modern Comprehension”. The Don State Public Library will gather scholars, teachers, employees of cultural institutions to discuss new approaches to the modern study in the work of M.A.Sholokhov, the features of teaching the writer’s works at the secondary schools and universities, instilling love of reading through Sholokhov’s books.

16:00–17:30 A literary and musical evening “All Sholokhov Bequeathed is Eternal”. The Rostov Musical Theatre (chamber stage) will show a performance of the best folk art groups of Rostov-on-Don and the Rostov Region. The audience will hear fragments of Sholokhov’s works, poems and songs about the Motherland and the Don country, and folk Cossack songs loved by Sholokhov.

Each 30 minutes within the day the radio “FM-on-Don” on the wave of 100.7 FM will broadcast fragments of the great writer’s works performed by the residents of the Don country. The project “We are Reading Sholokhov” brings together people of all generations. The first to read Sholokhov’s lines will be A.M.Sholokhov, Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Culture of the RF State Duma, and Darya Glushkova and Nadezhda Mokshina, cadets of the Second Don Cadet Corps named after Emperor Nicholas II. They will be joined by university and gymnasium students, members of the Russian Schoolchildren Movement, workers of different institutions and enterprises.

The secondary educational institutions of the Rostov Region will hold literature lessons “M.A.Sholokhov. The Fate of a Man”; college and university students will take part in watching and discussing the documentary “My Dear and Sweet!”(the author Lyubov Surkova) about the life and work of M.A.Sholokhov; in the library “literary salons” of Rostov-on-Don and the Rostov Region the readers will share their vision of the world of Sholokhov’s personages.

The events dedicated to the Memory Day of M.A.Sholokhov will be held under the support of the RF Ministry of Culture, the Rostov Region Ministry of Secondary and Professional Education, the Rostov Region Council of University Rectors, the Don State Public Library, the Rostov Musical Theatre, the State TV and Radio Company “Don-TR”, the Regional Information Holding “Don-Media” and a number of creative groups of the Don country.
