Sholokhov-Centre Opened Exhibition “Here the Genius Lived…”

The opening ceremony of the exhibition «“Here the Genius Lived…” Literary Places of Russia. For the 100th Anniversary of Painter Boris Shcherbakov» took place in Sholokhov-Centre of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov in Rostov-on-Don on January 25, 2017. This is an intermuseum project joined by the State L.N.Tolstoy Museum, the State A.S.Pushkin Museum, the State Memorial Historical, Literary and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve of A.S.Pushkin “Mikhailovskoye” (Pushkin Reserve) and the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve.

The exhibition is devoted to the work of Boris Valentinovich Scherbakov, who entered into the history of Russian art as a master of landscape painting, the founder of the “literary landscape” genre. The painter started his thematic series “Literary Places of Russia” in the 1930s, during his student practice in Mikhailovskoye.

After the Great Patriotic War he continued his work over the series of landscape sites, where the great Russian writers L.N.Tolstoy, I.S.Turgenev, A.S.Pushkin, M.Y.Lermontov once lived, worked and took their inspiration.

The exhibition includes 50 paintings, which B.V.Shcherbakov made in Yasnaya Polyana, Mikhailovskoye, Petrovskoye, Trigorskoye, Tarkhany, Vyoshenskaya, Spasskoye-Lutovinovo, and the materials from the private collection of Galina Borisovna Shcherbakova, the painter’s daughter, an art critic, and from the private collection of Yury Vitalyevich Mudrov, the board member of the Presidium and Chairman of the Department of Art History and Criticism of the Saint-Petersburg Union of Artists. All the exhibits are genuine.

The exhibition was opened by O.A.Anistratenko, Director of the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve. Among the guests were S.V.Kruze, Director of the Rostov Region Museum of Arts, G.N.Kulikova, Director of the Rostov Region Museum of Local History, O.V.Ignatov, Chairman of the Rostov Region Branch of the All-Russian Union of Artists, his deputy in exhibition activity A.M.Kurmanayevsky, M.Y.Bobrysheva, Director of the Rostov Art School, teachers and students.

The exhibition will run until April 3, 2017.
