Relay Quiz “Forest Tier”

On 14 October, the day of celebrating the 50th anniversary of Arborist Day, the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov jointly with the Novocherkassk A.K.Kortunov Engineering and Reclamation Institute of the Don Agricultural University held a relay-quiz “Forest Tier” for senior schoolchildren. It was joined by the teams from Novocherkassk, from the Rostov, Voronezh and Volgograd regions.

The preliminary stage took place in Novocherkassk this April. 10 teams from Novocherkassk, Taganrog, Stanitsa Grushevskaya of the Aksai District took part. The winners came to Vyoshenskaya to take part in the final stage of the relay-quiz.

The competitors were greeted by O.A.Anistratenko, Director of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov, S.N.Kruzhilin, Dean of the forestry faculty of the Novocherkassk Engineering and Reclamation Institute, A.V.Abakumov, Head of the Northern Department of the Regional State Environmental Monitoring, and T.Y.Turchin, Deputy Head for Environment and Rational Land Use of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov.

The participants of the relay-quiz, which includes 8 areas, were to perform a number of tasks: they determined the mechanical composition of soils, plant components, tree species by the leaves and fruits; herbaceous plants, the basic parameters of the tree stand (composition, age, and height) and species diversity of forest birds. The children successfully passed the test. While preparing and taking part in the “Forest Tier” they learned more about forest and acquired primary skills and abilities necessary for an arborist.

The winners were awarded medals bearing a logo of the relay-quiz, which were made by the Novocherkassk Engineering and Reclamation Institute, honorary diplomas of the first, second and third degrees and personal certificates of the Novocherkassk A.K.Kortunov Engineering and Reclamation Institute giving advantage for entering this institution.
