Contest “Forestry Decathlon”

The autumn Environmental Week of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov was followed by the contest “Forestry Decathlon” which was held on October 13, in the forest park “Pearl of Eurasia” in Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya.

The contest was organized by the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve, Environmental Non-Governmental V.I.Vernadsky Foundation and the South-European Research Forestry Experimental Station. The event was held in the Russian Federation for the first time. It was purposed for promoting knowledge about forest, raising interest for the forestry sciences and vocational guidance.

The contest was joined by the schoolchildren from the Sholokhov, Verkhnedonskoy, Bokovsky, Kashary, Oblivsky districts of the Rostov Region, and from Millerovo and Novocherkassk, the Volgograd and Voronezh regions.

Before the experiments, the schoolchildren listened to the lecture of T.Y.Turchin, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Deputy Director of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov. He outlined the theoretical foundations of the leading forestry disciplines: soil science, botany, dendrology, forest science, forest taxation, forest cultures, forest exploitation, forest protection, zoology and conservancy. Then the children answered the questions to identify the most attentive and erudite contestants. The winners were awarded diplomas and presents of two-volume encyclopedias of forestry.

All the participants were given medals and personal certificates entitling them to advantage when entering the forestry faculty of the Novocherkassk A.K.Kortunov Engineering and Reclamation Institute. Following it the contestants went to the forest park “Pearl of Eurasia”, where on the eve of the Arbor Day they planted saplings.
