You are Welcome to Karghin Fair on Pokrov Days”!

You are welcome to the Farmstead of T.A.Karghin in Stanitsa Karghinskaya on October 9, 2016, to the literary and ethnographical holiday “Karghin Fair on Pokrov Days”, which revives the traditions of the Don fairs of the early XX century and is included into the National Event Calendar within the frames of the new complex strategy “Time to Rest in Russia”.

Before the revolution, on the holidays of Intercession of the Theotokos (Pokrov Days) a great fair was annually held. It was famous all around the neighbourhood. This holiday was celebrated as a holiday of the Don Army (Voisko Donskoye) and a regimental holiday of the 12th Don Cossack Regiment, which was formed of the Cossacks from the stanitsas of Migulinskaya, Vyoshenskaya and Kazanskaya.

The Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov jointly with the Bokovsky District Administration holds the holiday for the third time recovering the former fame of Karghin Fair. According to the visitors and guests, it has become very popular. Here, in Stanitsa Karghinskaya, where M.A.Sholokhov spent his childhood and youth, where he began his writing career, each guest of the fair becomes a participant of fascinating events.

The holiday program includes Fair shopping, master-classes of arts and crafts, old games of little Cossacks, riding the swings and roundabouts, strongman competitions, circus performances and attractions. Romantic boating along the Chir River, taking photos in an old photo studio and a lottery game “Happy Feather” will make bright impressions.

The guests of the Fair will become the first visitors of Cinematograph “Ideal” which will open its doors after restoration, will see exhibitions ”Sholokhov’s Personages in Cinema”, “Kerosene Lamps of the XIX–XX centuries”, “At the Set of a Silent Film”.

The guests will be shown a theatrical performance “An Unusual Meeting on an Unusual Day, or Bride-Show in Karghin” staged by the actors of Bokovsky District the Rostov Region. This joke play is based on the first literary experiments of young Misha Sholokhov, who acted in the theatrical club of “Ideal”.
