A New Exhibition Project in Sholokhov-Centre will Tell about the Life and Work of M.Y.Lermontov

21.09.2016

On September 30, 2016, an exhibition “I was Happy Here…” M.Y.Lermontov. The Life and Work” will open in Sholokhov-Centre of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov in Rostov-on-Don. It is a joint project of all Lermontov museums of Russia aimed at showing the poet’s life full of adventures and wanderings, where, wherever he was, he found a material for his works of genius.

The exhibition is headlined with the words from the poem “1831 June, 11th Day” “I was Happy Here…”. The nature, love and work were the things that made M.Y.Lermontov feel happy. And such was his love for Russia and life, his power of creative work, that in all the places visited by the poet his museums were established.

Tarkhany is the place where M.Y.Lermontov was brought to in his early childhood and where he spent half of his life, was the cradle of that great feeling which determined the life of the poet and became his burial place. Moscow was his birthplace, where he fell in love and made his first steps in writing. Petersburg was the city of his creative maturity. The Caucasus was the land to amaze his poetic soul with “the best, the most beneficial impressions”. Lermontov could say “I was happy here…” about each of these places.

The fate of M.Y.Lermontov destined him to live only 26 years of which 13 years were devoted to his creative work. The great poet, a gifted painter and a brave officer, he has remained a unique and unrepeatable event in Russian and in world culture for long years.

The collections of Lermontov museums keep unique materials. The visitors will see autographs, paintings and drawings of the poet, his personal belongings, books, documentary sources, handwritten albums and household items. They make a bright illustration of the life of the Russian genius and of his diverse and versatile work.

The exhibition project “I was Happy Here…” M.Y.Lermontov.The Life and Work” was organized by the State Lermontov Museum-Reserve “Tarkhany” (Lermontovo Village the Penza Region) jointly with the National M.A.Sholokhov Museum-Reserve. The exhibits were also presented by the project members:
