“Karghin Fair on Pokrov Days”

On October 9, a literary and ethnographical holiday “Karghin Fair on Pokrov Days” is going to be held for the third time in Stanitsa Karghinskaya at the Farmstead of T.A.Karghin. It is organized jointly with the Bokovsky District Administration to revive traditions of Don fairs and old holiday amusements.

Late in the XIX–early in the XX centuries the Pokrov fairs in Karghin Village were known not only in the Voisko Donskoye Region, but also in the neighbouring regions. The folks came to the fair to buy and sell goods, to show themselves and to see others, to make children happy and to have their fling.

This year, the guests of the fair will see the farmstead of Timofey Karghin adorned with coloured checkboxes and ribbons. Touring about the mill described by M.A.Sholokhov in his works the visitors will learn about the difference between a roller mill and steam mill, will see mill equipment of the early XX century and to learn about the peculiarities of the milling process of that time.

A cinematograph “Ideal” will open its doors after restoration. It was built early in the XX century to gratify the neighbourhood with the art of cinema. In the 1920s there was a theatrical circle, where the plays written by young Mikhail Sholokhov were staged.

Nimble hawkers will offer peddlery to the quests, and merchants will welcome to the stylized old retail shops – hardware’s, draper’s, honey’s and others. A pleasant surprise awaits the visitors in pub and tea: here one can taste Cossack dishes, take scented tea of steppe herbs.

Besides traditional attractions of swings and roundabouts there will be many other vintage amusements. The guests will enjoy a carousel ride on “Giant Steps”, play an old game of “Kubar”, walk on stilts, join a fair lottery “Happy Feather”, play “Biryulki”, “Kalechina-Malechina” and climb up the pole for awards. The holiday makers will see fair life scenes, puppet show, circus show, strongman competition, will hear Cossack songs performed by folk groups, will enjoy horse ride and pony ride, boating along the Chir River, taking photos in an old photo studio, joining master-classes and funny competitions. A big entertainment program is prepared specially for young guests.
