Photo Exhibition “Genius Loci” in Sholokhov Museum

26.07.2016

On July 29, the Excursion and Exhibition Centre “People’s House” will open a personal photo exhibition “Genius Loci”of the well-known Rostov photo artist Karp Pashinyan.

A popular Latin expression “Genius Loci” has a double meaning: this is a unique atmosphere of a particular place (estates, houses, mountains or even trees) and its patron spirit, which is identified with a mythological character or a historical personality. Speaking modern language “Genius Loci” connects spiritual, intellectual and emotional phenomena and their material environment.

The idea of “Genius Loci” is closely associated with the perception of landscapes, which inspired poets, painters and philosophers. These places in Russia are the Pushkin Mountains, “Yesenin’s” Konstantinovo, “Lermontov’s” Kislovodsk and Taman.

The estates and houses are associated not only with pictures, literary or musical works, but also with the personalities who created them. The photo artist K.Pashinyan in his photo works tried to catch the connection of the person with his living place, to find the finest correspondence between the landscapes of the places, where L.N.Tolstoy, I.S.Turgenev, A.P.Chekhov, M.Y.Lermontov, A.T.Bolotov grew up and became great creators and the images of their creations. The exhibition will show the artistic photos of the unique places of Russia – the literary estates of Yasnaya Polyana, Spasskoye Lutovinovo, Melikhovo, Tarkhany and Dvoryaninovo, the estates of Polenovo of the famous Russian painter V.D.Polenov, and Ivanovka – that of the famous Russian composer S.V.Rakhmaninov.

You are welcome to the exhibition which will run from July, 29, until September 9, 2016.
