NewsExhibition “A Find on the Edge of the Earth”15.06.2016On June 14, the exhibition “A Find on the Edge of the Earth” from the Yamalo-Nenets Museum and Exhibition Complex named after I.S.Shemanovsky started its run in Sholokhov-Centre of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov. The exhibition tells about the ancient and modern Yamal: its geography, archaeology, ethnography and traditional beliefs. The central exhibit in the display is a little mammoth Lyuba, a well-preserved representative of the Ice Age fauna. Its geological age is 42000. The find of the little mammoth in 2007 became a world sensation and gave the scientists an opportunity to learn more about the Pleistocene epoch, the climate change and the reasons of animal extinction. The exhibition displays about 200 items from the archaeological, ethnographical and natural sciences museum collections including the items from the excavation of the sacrificial place of Ust-Poluy, settlements of Ust-Voykarsky and Mangazeysky. The visitors will see traditional clothes of the peoples of the north, household utensils, needlework, a modern dwelling, sledges, installations of sacred and sacrificial places, attributes and ritual clothes of shamans, bones and teeth of mammoths, skulls of the primitive bison and musk ox, and many others. The exhibition is accompanied by the works of the photo artist Sergei Anisimov, Member of the Russian Geographical Society. He made the photo works in Yamal and during the expeditions to northern and Arctic regions of our planet – the islands of Wrangel, White and Greenland, the archipelagos of Franz Josef Land and Svalbard, the north of Canada, Norway and Iceland. In the interactive area the visitors will take part in the games of the North, will see animation and science-fiction films. In a hot southern summer, Sholokhov-Centre will become a place, where the permafrost of the Yamal will contact with the sultry Don steppe and each visitor can feel an icy breath of the Arctic.
