Sholokhov Museum Welcomes to Cossack Martial Arts

On May, 8, we invite everyone for the literary and ethnographic holiday “Steed is the Dearest for Cossack” (Cossack martial arts of Vyoshenskaya), where everyone can learn how to handle a horse, try to be a brave horseman and take part in the competitions on Cossack martial arts. This is the only holiday, where the heroes are a Cossack and his faithful steed, and each guest becomes not only a viewer, but also an active participant in the fascinating spectacle.

The artistic and ethnographic composition “Offs to the State Service” will take you 100 years back and you will learn how in old times recruits were being fitted out and were seen off to defend their native land, you will visit a Cossack field camp depicted in the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don” by M.A.Sholokhov, give your order to the contemporary recruits, future soldiers, and will enjoy the performance of the military city ensemble “Pravoslavny Don” (director G.Vechorkin) and the folk song and dance group “Stanichniki” of the Sholokhov Art Centre.

A steed always had a particular place in the life of Cossacks: it was a helper in everyday life, an integral part of the art of war and a faithful friend. You will learn about the importance of the horse in Cossack life, about traditions and customs connected with the military service, and you will learn to saddle and fetter horses.

Each horse has its own nature, and you will see it looking at the fine animals at the Stables of the Museum. They will surprise you with their cleverness, agility and faith to their masters. You will also meet with cheerful and perky ponies.

The guests will be particularly attracted by the demonstration performances: races, Cossack lava (drift) having no barriers, fancy riding, wielding with a sword and a lance, and the main martial techniques Cossack used in battles.

Young Cossacks from the Shakhti Cadet Corps and recruits of the Sholokhov District will take part in the Cossack pentathlon competitions and show their fine skills.

A special program is prepared for children and their parents: interactive classes, games, competitions, master-classes will reveal their creative abilities. You will learn to make souvenir horses of clay, bast and fabric, will draw horses on glass and in sandart and many other things.

The guests of the holiday have a ride in carriages, on horseback, take photos, buy souvenirs and taste porridge of the field cuisine.

Besides, the Motocycle Federatiion of the Rostov Region will show their performance of the motocycle clubs “Danger” (Taganrog), “Russian Choppers” (Bataisk) and “Honda Gold Wing” (Rostov-on-Don).

The holiday program will last from 9.30 to 13.30.
