NewsLet’s Plant Forest Together11.04.2016Marking Arbor Day on April 8, the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov held an environmental action “Let’s Plant Forest Together”, which was joined by the students of Sholokhov gymnasium in the forested area “Forest Pearl of Eurasia”. The members of the action were greeted by A.M.Sholokhov, Director of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov, S.G.Bashtura, Deputy Head of the Sholokhov District Administration, and A.V.Abakumov, Head of the Northern Department of the Regional State Environmental Monitoring. The forested area is situated on the conditionally forest suitable soils of hilly sands, but there are planted trees and shrubs of 57 species not adapted to local conditions however able to grow under conditions of the dry steppe climate. Now its areas are complemented with seedlings of Crimean pine (with open and closed root system) and saplings of deciduous species (oak, elm, catalpa, maple, honey locust and ailanthus). On the Arbor Day there were 5500 trees planted in the forested area, and an orchard of apple-trees and pear-trees of old Cossack species is laid on the territory of the Museum-Reserve Stables. Before the Arbor Day, some preparations were made: planting locations were determined, black soil and manure were delivered. For better rooting of the plants in the hottest and driest months (July–August) watering of the planted crops is planned. The territory of the forested area has gained attraction for guests and residents of the district: a horse rout is laid, the alley of ash Pennsylvania is covered with rubble and surrounded with a wattle fence, in the centre of the forested area a bower is set. We invite nature enthusiasts to come, rest and learn about the biological diversity of trees and shrubs in the unique forested area “Forest Pearl of Eurasia”.
