We Mark “Sorok Sorokov”

31.03.2016

The Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov holds theatrical classes devoted to the folk holiday of “Sorok Sorokov”.

The name of the holiday is connected with the memory about the forty martyrs of Sebaste revered by Orthodox Church. According to the folk omens, on the days of “Sorok Sorokov” celebration, winter is over and spring comes with day and night equal. The legend goes, that 40 warriors turned into birds, which returning to their home country bring a long-awaited spring on their wings.

On this day in former times, housewives baked traditional bread larks of lean dough and gave them to children. Boys and girls holding their larks high ran to a hillock and called spring: “Larks, come to us, take the frosty winter away and bring a warm spring!” In class, the children will learn about marking the holiday of “Sorok Sorokov” in the Upper Don region, about lots of folk omens connected with the holiday and a lark of lean dough, a symbol of the holiday, and will have flavoured tea infused with the Don herbs.

The class will be held until April 7.

You can register by phone: 23-100, 23-700.
