Arbor Day in the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov

The Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov has got a good tradition of marking Arbor Day. This April 8, at 11 o’clock, the museum-workers and the young ecologists of “Sholokhov Source” movement will come to the forest of Friendship of Peoples near Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya to join the action “Let’s Create a Forest Together” and plant young trees.

On the forest territory with extreme environmental conditions limiting the culture of the majority of woody plants, along with the Crimean Pine, the main forest-forming species, there will be planted English Oak, Red Oak, Chinese Elm, Catalpa Bignonioides, Malus Sylvestris, Acer Platanoides, Honey Locust grown into a mini-nursery of the Museum-Reserve, and Ailanthus Altissima brought from the Botanical Garden of the South Federal University (Rostov-on-Don).

For a better survival rate the plants with closed root system were prepared. The total number of seedlings to plant come to 1500.

The man-made forest is an excellent research platform for identification of new tree species capable of growing on the sand in a dry steppe climate and a unique site for taking schoolchildren to forestation and their acquisition of practical skills in planting works.
