Competitions of Young Environment Conservationists

The autumn Environmental Week dedicated to the Year of Ecology in Russia was continued on October 11, 2017, with the V jubilee relay-quiz “Forest Tier” and the competition “Forest Decathlon”, which were held by the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov jointly with the Novocherkassk A.K.Kortunov Engineering and Meliorative Institute of the Don Agricultural University and the research branch “South-European NILOS”

Senior school students, who love and know the nature of their home country and are ready to contribute to the environment protection, came to Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya. The Rostov Region was represented by young ecologists from the Sholokhov and Upper Don gymnasiums, schools of the Sholokhov District, Novocherkassk, Krasny Sulin, Volgograd, Voronezh regions and the Republic of Kalmykia.

The members of the event were greeted by T.Y.Turchin, Deputy Director for Environment and Rational Land Use of the Museum-Reserve of M.A.Sholokhov, N.V.Ivanisova, Director of the Don Small Forestry Academy, professor of the Forestry Departmnet, P.I.Makushkin, Head of the Sholokhov Interdistrict Forestry Department of the Rostov Region Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, I.Y.Cheplyansky, Director of the research branch “South-European NILOS”.

The young ecologists were given a talk by Doctor of Agricultural Sciences T.Y.Turchin. The children with great interest learned about the basics of ten leading forest disciplines: pedology, botany, dendrology, forestry, forest taxation, forest cultures, timber exploitation, forest protection, zoology, and environment protection. Then the contestants of “Forest Decathlon” answered theoretical questions, and the members of the relay-quiz “Forest Tier” completed the competition practical assignments. They determined the tree species by the leaves, the basic parameters of the stand (age and height), components of plants, soil mechanical composition, herbaceous plants and forest bird species diversity.

The winners were awarded medals bearing a logo of the contest and the relay-quiz, presents and personal certificates which entitle for admission advantage for the forestry faculty of the Novocherkassk A.K.Kortunov Engineering and Meliorative Institute.

The competitions showed that the young conservationists have a conscious approach to understanding of the influence of human activities on the biosphere.

Preparation for and participation in the “Forest Tier” allowed them to enrich their knowledge about forest and acquire primary skills and habits necessary for the young conservationist.

The actions carried out during the autumn Environmental Week foster the formation of personal responsibility of the participants for the environmental condition. The children are sure to share their knowledge and skills with their peers in order to protect together the environment of the native land.
