Memory Day of M.A.Sholokhov

On February 21, 1984, Mikhail Alexandrovich Sholokhov had gone. Every year on this day the world remembers the great writer who was the first to tell about the life of the Don Cossacks, to glorify the quiet River Don, who created the works making us better and cleaner in heart.

Today, from the early morning, the writer’s countrymen and guests of Stanitsa Vyoshenskaya went to the burial place of M.A.Sholokhov and to his bronze bust at the Don embankment to lay flowers and bend in a bow to the memory of the man, whose life was devoted to the people and to his country. As well, a ceremony of laying flowers to the monument of M.A.Sholokhov took place in Rostov-on-Don.

Yesterday, in the Vyoshensky Palace of Culture there was held a memorial evening of M.A.Sholokhov. The audience was shown a literary and documentary performance “A Word of Yours is My Joy” telling about the history of the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don”, about the support of the young author by Y.G.Levitskaya, the editor of the Publisher “Moskovskaya Pravda” and about the long-term friendship of the Sholokhovs and the Levitskayas families.

On February 21, the Don State Public Library will hold “a round table”, where the scholars, teachers, librarians and students will discuss the literary heritage of the writer in the context of modern comprehension. The exhibition specially prepared for the memorial date will show books and articles of the modern Sholokhov scholars.

The Museum-Reserve “Sholokhov-Centre” will demonstrate the films based on Sholokhov’s works, the Rostov Musical Theatre will hold a literary musical evening “All Sholokhov Bequeathed is Eternal”, at schools the students will have literary lessons, and the libraries will hold readers’ conferences and thematic evenings.

Every year, Memory Day of the great writer joins up thousands of people who appreciate the Word of Sholokhov. And unwittingly, we recall the words of the first cosmonaut of the planet Yury Gagarin, who said after meeting with Mikhail Alexandrovich: “The depth of Sholokhov’s penetration in the human soul is infinite…”
